Don’t be fooled. Despite its rather awkward name, “Blimp –- The Flying Adventures,” this app soars high in multiple game genres. This 2-d arcade-style game is all at once a taxi driver, bomber, and racer game. And while it’s easy to pick-up and play, you’ll find it quickly consuming your free time.
This particular app, which appeared at the Worldwide Developers Conference, supposedly took a team of three Czech guys five months to develop, and their effort did not go in vain. Craneballs Studios has a classic on their hands.
In Blimp you play the role of a veteran other-worldly blimp pilot who comes back into service with a fringe merchant group. Your job: collect cargo, deliver people, and bomb the bejeezus out of aliens. (Sound vaguely like Firefly yet?) All the while racing the clock and trying not to damage your fragile sky bus.
While I’ll be the first to admit that this game and its controls take some getting used to, it’s well worth the journey. The game requires you to tilt the iPhone to steer, tap (lightly and frequently) with your left thumb to accelerate upwards, and tap with your right thumb to drop bombs on enemy turrets, tanks, and blimps.
Also, dodge radiation gasses, air vents, and flames and take it easy on those landings because your health doesn’t last long. Bear with the tutorial mission because the missions get easier after that—at least for a while—and soon you’ll find yourself dodging through levels 1-20 like the veteran pilot you supposedly are.
And while the storyline itself doesn’t win any Oscars, it’s nice to have some background on why exactly you’re flying this blimp around.
Perhaps my favorite parts of the game are the introductory story screens with sketches of pirate-looking bionic men. Makes me think of Treasure Planet. Argh!
The game also includes a scoreboard where you can see exactly how many times you’ve died, how many passengers you’ve carried, how many levels you’ve completed, and other fun facts. Sync this with your facebook account and see who’s the best Blimp pilot.
Best app of the month? The year? I won’t draw any hasty conclusions, but it’s certainly a must-have for serious iPhone gamers.
Innovative and engrossing game
Fun sci-fi theme
Splendid graphics and sound
Controls difficult at first
Tutorial a little frustrating
