I don’t understand what for but Scalar Corp has developed AirMicro model A1 – portable microscope that is capable of hooking up to the iPhone or iPad via a wireless LAN.
Of course, we have already seen a lot of strange ways of iPad usage, there are many uncommon accessories for it, but I never thought about microscope for iPad…
Anyway, I’m sure people will find a use for this device right away, so let’s talk about it in detail. The microscope features a power efficient IEEE802.11b compliant transceiver chip from GainSpan Corp which could considerably prolong the battery life. Thus, due to its special software AirMicro model A1 can deliver the same image to multiple iPhones and iPads simultaneously. Concerning the novelty itself, it can be used with various lens units with magnification ratios ranging from 50x to 200x.
AirMicro model A1 is equipped with a 5-megapixel CMOS image sensor which can capture QVGA format video at a frame rate of 15fps, the device is powered by three AA batteries.
Except Apple products, AirMicro model A1 developers are going to make their microscope compatible with other platforms, such as Android. The device will hit North America the Japanese market in mid-June 2010, the AirMicro model A1 will cost around $390 in USA.
